7. Analyze your body language

One of the ways people communicate without realizing it is through body language — hand gestures, hair twirling, face rubbing, glances around the room, slumping and others.

Body language reveals more than you may want others to know. Do you want your body language to show how nervous you are? Be conscious of your body language as you speak or watch yourself on videotape. What do you observe?

Questions to ask yourself about your body language:

  • “Do I have any nervous tics like popping my knuckles, twitching my eyes or humming?”
  • “Does my facial expression reveal disagreement with a point being made?”
  • “Does my posture indicate my interest or disinterest during a meeting?”
