7. Focus on the positive

Optimism is contagious. Take a positive view of difficulties the team faces. If you really believe your team will succeed and you show it, you will boost the team’s spirit.

Ways to find the positive in negative situations:

  • If the team’s first effort fails, focus on what team members can learn from its mistakes.
  • If team members often disagree, show how the different opinions can contribute to a better solution.
  • When problems crop up, point out that it’s good to face problems sooner rather than later.
  • If the team’s budget is small and the schedule is tight, take these as challenges to show how efficient the team can be.
