1. What is emotional intelligence (EI)?

According to Psychology Today, emotional intelligence (EI) is “the ability to identify and manage one’s own emotions, as well as the emotions of others.” Consider the separate parts of that definition.

Having a high EI means being able to:

  • Identify the emotions you are feeling at any given moment
  • Manage your emotions so that they don’t get the best of you
  • Understand the emotions that other people are likely feeling
  • Behave so that you help others cope with their emotions
