8. EI in your nonverbal communication
Emotional intelligence can help you understand the emotional signals expressed in nonverbal communication—signals both by other people and by yourself. Look at these two scenarios:
- At team meetings, your colleague Benito is usually cheerful, optimistic, and full of ideas. Today, though, he says little, frowns, and keeps tapping his fingers on the table. If you have high EI, you realize he’s impatient and probably opposed to the ideas being expressed. Therefore, after the meeting, you make a point of asking his opinion.
- The newest member of your team dominates today’s meeting, and she talks about subjects on which you’re an expert. Your supervisor agrees with everything she says. After a few minutes, you find yourself sitting tense in your chair, biting your lips, arms crossed rigidly. EI helps you realize that you’re jealous, and when you realize that, you start to control your emotional response.
