7. EI in your writing

Your EI also affects your writing, even short communications like emails and texts.

Suppose you’re part of an email chain at work that goes on for a week, circling round and round a problem. You think the answer to the problem is simple, and you mentioned it three days ago, but so far nobody has paid attention to your idea. Here are some ways you may respond:

  • Get exasperated and give up, saying to yourself, “I’ve offered the right solution and they’re ignoring it. I wash my hands of this project.”
  • Get angry about the waste of time and fire off a nasty email to everyone on the list.
  • Feel hurt that your ideas aren’t respected and complain to your boss that your coworkers won’t listen.
  • Write another email reiterating your solution and asking your coworkers to let you know what they think about the solution.

If you have emotional intelligence, you’ll be able to identify and control your exasperation, anger, or hurt. You’ll avoid the first three options and choose the last one.
