3. Self-regulation
Once you identify your emotions, you can begin to self-regulate, that is, manage how you deal with emotions and how you express them through your behavior.
Self-regulation doesn’t mean ignoring or squelching your emotions. Rather, it means accepting their existence and learning how to deal with them in a productive way.
People use various techniques to help themselves self-regulate. Here are a few:
- Exercise
- A nature walk
- Meditation
- Listening to music
For example, if your boss criticized you at work, you may arrive home feeling anxious, ashamed, defiant, humiliated, wounded, or a host of other negative emotions. You could decide to take a short walk around the neighborhood, chilling out while you listen to music on your phone. When you finally go into your apartment, you’re less likely to snap at your roommate. That’s good self-regulation.
