4. Self-motivation

Self-motivation, often called intrinsic motivation, is another concept connected with self-awareness and self-regulation. Motivation is the drive you feel to get something done.

You can be motivated by external goals like money, promotions, and praise. But you can also be motivated by internal goals, such as satisfying your personal sense of achievement by doing a good job.

For people with emotional intelligence, the internal goals are more important than the external ones. Consider three employees at the local supermarket:

  • Toshi stocks the shelves in a hurry because his supervisor criticized him last week for being too slow.
  • Luana creates a very attractive display of specialty cheeses, hoping it will be noticed by her boss and earn her points toward a promotion.
  • KaNisha sees an elderly customer, alone in the pasta aisle, staring at the shelves in a puzzled way. “Can I help you, ma’am?” she asks, and when the woman mentions that she can’t find the egg noodles, KaNisha fetches them for her. KaNisha feels good whenever she helps a customer.

In these examples, KaNisha is the one with self-motivation.
