5. Empathy

Empathy means being aware of another person’s feelings even when she or he doesn’t speak about them. In fact, in its deepest sense, empathy means that you imagine yourself in that person’s shoes.

People with emotional intelligence have a strong sense of empathy. They are “tuned in” to other people’s emotional experiences. Empathy is different from sympathy:

  • Sympathy can be described as feeling for someone. For instance, if your aunt is struggling with a broken ankle, you’re sad for her.
  • Empathy is more like feeling with someone. That is, you picture yourself in your aunt’s place and feel how difficult it is to climb the stairs.

Having empathy allows you to be more sensitive to what other people are going through. At times, an empathetic person seems almost like a mind-reader.
