6. EI in your speech

Your degree of emotional intelligence shows up in what you say to others, both in your personal life and at work.

Imagine that you’ve had a big argument with your romantic partner, maybe the start of a breakup, and you’ve been suffering alone at home for two days. Your best friend calls to suggest going to a free concert in the park. Your first reaction is to lash out: “Why would I want to do that? The weather’s too hot. The music’s always crummy. Leave me alone!”

  • A response like that would be driven by your own hurt and frustrations.
  • It might also harm your friendship.

If you have emotional intelligence, you’ll recognize your emotions, calm yourself, and accept your friend’s invitation.
