Activity 2: Be Prepared

How you present yourself during a job interview is the most important element in whether you or another equally qualified person gets the job you want. A polished appearance, confident tone of voice, good grammar skills, and courteous manners will put you ahead of a competitor for the same position.

Imagine that Mr. Pulaski in Activity 1 read your letter and wants to meet with you. To prepare for the interview, you anticipate the questions he will ask. Write the answers to the questions so you will be prepared.

Tell me a little about yourself.

What are your best qualities and job strengths?

What are your weaknesses?

Tell me about your career plans. Where do you see yourself in five years?

How do you handle on-the-job safety problems?

How well do you handle criticism from coworkers, supervisors, or customers?

What is your favorite part of your job? Your least favorite?

What was the worst job you ever had? What didn't you like about it?

How comfortable are you asking for help from supervisors or co-workers? How comfortable are you offering help?

Pair with a classmate if possible and practice your interviewing technique. Take turns playing the role of the automotive body repairer and Mr. Pulaski.

Remember, this is a job interview! Conduct yourself politely, professionally, and respectfully. Practice maintaining eye contact and speaking in a clear, confident voice.
